Calumma cf. gastrotaenia from Binara - a candidate species?

13/05/2026

Calumma gastrotaenia, commonly known as the Perinet chameleon, Malagasy side-striped chameleon, or  Short-nosed chameleon, is a small, rainforest-dwelling species endemic to Madagascar. It is best recognized by its subtle casque and the characteristic lateral striping along its body.

This species is typically associated with the humid mid-elevation forests of eastern Madagascar, particularly around the Perinet (Andasibe) region. However, there is an intriguing, isolated report from the Binara protected forest near Daraina in northern Madagascar. A unique photograph taken by Franco, a Marojejy guide, documents a specimen from this locality.

The Binara individual shows fine morphological distinctions and unusual coloration compared to typical Perinet populations. Given that differences in these small Calumma species are often subtle, such variation may indicate a candidate species. To confirm whether this population represents a distinct taxon, DNA analysis will be imperative.

This observation highlights how even well-known Malagasy chameleons can still surprise us with hidden diversity, reminding us of the importance of careful field documentation and molecular study in conservation and taxonomy.
