From Shadows to Fire: The Breeding Colors of Brookesia antakarana

04/01/2026

Brookesia antakarana, a robust leaf chameleon species endemic to northern Madagascar, thrives in the leaf litter of humid forests where its cryptic coloration provides excellent camouflage against predators. Typically, these reptiles blend seamlessly with their environment, appearing in muted browns and greys that mimic decaying leaves and forest debris. However, during the breeding season, their appearance becomes strikingly different. Males adopt a vivid orange hue, a dramatic shift that signals reproductive readiness and helps them stand out to potential mates. Females, in turn, develop a lichen-like pattern across their bodies, enhancing their camouflage but also displaying subtle ornamentation. This pattern is often accentuated by a distinctive yellow dot on the forehead, a unique feature that may play a role in mate recognition.
