Anolis landestoyi: A Chameleon-Like Anole Lizard from Hispaniola

Often called "New World chameleons" for their color-changing ability and arboreal lifestyle, Anolis lizards were a central focus of Gunther Köhler's career. Though he never worked on true chameleons, his deep expertise in Anolis — especially those with chameleon-like traits — created a meaningful link between his legacy and the broader fascination with these adaptive reptiles.

Gunther Köhler (1965–2025): A Life of Science, Music, and Grace

Gunther Köhler was more than a herpetologist — he was a rare fusion of scientific brilliance, artistic soul, and human warmth. Known for his groundbreaking work on Neotropical reptiles, especially Anolis lizards and Ctenosaura iguanas, Köhler described over 120 new species and led conservation efforts across Central America and the Caribbean. His revision of Hispaniola's Anolis species in 2016 remains a landmark in reptile taxonomy.

But Köhler's talents extended far beyond the lab. He was an active musician and guitarist in the country music band Flaggstaff, based in Aschaffenburg. His passion for music was as disciplined and heartfelt as his scientific work — a testament to his multifaceted nature.

Those who knew him speak of a man who was prolific, precise, and deeply intelligent, yet also kind, generous, and quietly charismatic. He brought rigor to science, soul to music, and warmth to every collaboration.

Gunther Köhler passed away suddenly on June 15, 2025, at age 60. His absence leaves a profound void in the herpetological community and among the many lives he touched. The world has lost a unique blend of curiosity, creativity, and compassion.

We will miss you, Gunther — your mind, your music, and your humanity.
