Myth 110: “UVB is Optional Indoors”

The Claim
Some keepers argue that chameleons can thrive indoors without UVB lighting if they are fed calcium and vitamin D3 supplements.
The Reality
This belief is dangerous and incorrect. UVB exposure is not optional—it is a biological necessity.
Vitamin D3 Synthesis: Chameleons rely on UVB radiation to synthesize vitamin D3 in their skin.
Vitamin D3 regulates calcium absorption and bone mineralization.
Without UVB, supplements alone cannot replicate the natural metabolic pathways.
Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD)• Lack of UVB leads to hypocalcemia, skeletal deformities, and fractures.
MBD is one of the most common preventable causes of suffering and death in captive reptiles.
Supplement Risks: Over-supplementation of D3 can cause toxicity, kidney damage, and calcification of soft tissues.
UVB provides a self-regulating mechanism: reptiles produce only as much D3 as they need.
Clarification
Indoor setups without UVB are incomplete environments.
Supplements are supportive, not substitutes.
UVB bulbs must be replaced regularly (usually every 6–12 months, depending on manufacturer) because their output declines even if the bulb still produces visible light.
The myth persists because supplements seem like a shortcut. But shortcuts in husbandry are illusions: they trade short-term convenience for long-term harm. A keeper who denies UVB is not saving effort—they are silently eroding the animal's skeleton.
