Palleon nasus: The Vanishing Miniature of Ranomafana

11/07/2026

Palleon nasus is one of Madagascar's most elusive reptiles—a pygmy chameleon so inconspicuous that even seasoned herpetologists rarely encounter it. It belongs to the genus Palleon, the only Malagasy pygmy chameleon lineage with a laterally flattened body, unlike the cylindrical forms of Brookesia. This subtle flattening gives it a leaf‑like profile, helping it disappear among moss and leaf litter of the eastern rainforest.
The species is known mainly from the montane forests around Ranomafana, where its cryptic coloration and minute size make detection nearly impossible. It spends its life close to the ground, moving slowly through damp undergrowth, perfectly blending with decaying vegetation.
Finding Palleon nasus is a triumph of patience and luck—a reminder that Madagascar still hides creatures so small and secretive that they seem more imagined than real.
