Research & Conservation of Chameleons in SW Madagascar

06/08/2025

Led by Hajaniaina Rasoloarison, this initiative focuses on safeguarding the unique chameleon species of southwestern Madagascar's dry and spiny ecosystems. Most of these reptiles are critically endangered or poorly studied, facing threats like deforestation, bushfires, mining, and climate change.

The project combines ecological research—mapping species distribution and habitats—with social surveys to understand local communities' views on conservation. By integrating scientific data and community insights, the program aims to identify the drivers of species decline and develop effective strategies to prevent extinction.

Though centered on chameleons, the findings will support broader conservation efforts across Madagascar's fragile arid landscapes.
