Ancient Genomes from the Green Sahara

A recent study published in Nature presents the first ancient genomes from the Green Sahara, a period when the Sahara was a humid savanna rather than a desert. Researchers analyzed 7,000-year-old naturally mummified remains from the Takarkori rock shelter in Libya, revealing a long-isolated North African lineage.

Key Findings:

  • The genomes show minimal non-African ancestry, suggesting pastoralism spread through cultural exchange rather than migration.

  • Contrary to previous theories, the Green Sahara was not a corridor connecting Northern and sub-Saharan Africa.

  • The studied lineage diverged from sub-Saharan populations around 50,000 years ago, maintaining deep genetic continuity in North Africa.

This research provides critical insights into human history during the African Humid Period, highlighting the unique genetic heritage of ancient North African populations.
