Furcifer cf. timoni, Marojejy

Furcifer timoni was described from Montagne d'Ambre and, likely due to a secretive lifestyle predominantly restricted to the forest canopy, remains a rarely encountered species.
To date, it is recorded from three isolated locations in northern Madagascar:

  • Montagne d'Ambre
  • Sava region
  • Marojejy National Park

Because these localities are geographically isolated from one another, it remains an open question whether all known populations are conspecific or represent distinct taxa.
Photographic evidence from the southernmost known limit in Marojejy National Park suggests that this population may represent a candidate species, differing subtly in male rostral horn morphology and overall coloration. The geographic isolation, spanning a distance of over 200 km, lends further support to this possibility.
Given the exceptionally high level of local endemism characteristic of Marojejy, genetic analyses will be essential to definitively resolve the taxonomic status of this population.
