Furcifer campani: An Incredible Tapestry

The jeweled chameleon (Furcifer campani) is an extreme altitude specialist of Madagascar. It thrives in high-altitude alpine meadows well above the tree line, withstanding even harsh night frosts.

Why evolution shaped it into one of the most colorful chameleons in Madagascar remains a fascinating mystery. Yet, its striking variation is undeniable. (See attached photos.)

Rather than standing out, this intricate combination of vibrant dots and longitudinal lines in contrasting shades actually serves as advanced crypsis. The body is subject to somatolysis—a camouflage strategy where high-contrast patterns and color blocks visually break up the animal's continuous outline against the background.

As a result, this dazzling disruptive coloration makes the shape of these high-altitude jewels virtually disappear into the surrounding vegetation, rendering them almost invisible in their natural alpine home.
