The Stripe That Erases the Body

In Madagascar's forest undergrowth, a spectacular tiny dragon crawls through the grass and bamboo stems — Calumma gastrotaenia, a master of disappearance.

The epithet gastrotaenia comes from Greek gaster (belly) and tainia (band, stripe), literally "belly‑stripe." This stripe is not ornamental. It is a functional device of crypsis. A narrow‑bodied chameleon living on thin stems cannot afford a continuous silhouette. The lateral stripe acts as somatolysis — the optical dissolution of body shape — splitting the animal into two slender visual elements so the observer perceives lines rather than a body.

Crypsis here is a composite system: morphology, somatolysis, and moment‑specific coloration working together to make a tiny dragon vanish.
