Where the Panthers Follow the River Inland

While the majority of panthers inhabit the humid coastal belt, several populations push far into the island's interior, forming narrow ecological corridors that mirror the flow of rivers and the persistence of suitable forest. On the east coast, the most striking example is the westernmost population at Vohimana, where these animals proliferate along the Rianila River, following its course from the coastal lowlands of Brickaville deep into the foothills. This linear distribution reflects both the species' dependence on dense, moisture‑rich vegetation and the fragmented nature of the remaining habitat, mostly situated along rivers.
The appearance of the males in this population is nothing short of spectacular. Their chromatic intensity surpasses that of many coastal forms, with saturated greens, oranges and reds, and sharply defined barring that becomes even more vivid during displays. The combination of inland humidity, riverine forest structure, and partial isolation has produced a phenotype that stands out even within a species already renowned for its brilliance.
